you need to disconnect the shift and remove the mounting bolts .look for an access plate on the side of the midsection with 2 screws ,that is the shift /disconnect point.there may be another plate inside that?? there will be a brass connector with 2 screws ,if you remove the bottom one that will allow the lowerunit shifter to become disconnected.I believe you have 4 mounting bolts, but check on the sides and under the lowerunit .When putting lower back ,be sure the notch on the shaft ,aligns with the brass connector hole to allow the screw to lock the shaft ,you dont need to stron arm on tite, you will strip the brass, its important the screw slides thru the hole and the shaft slot or you will strip it out, often people miss the notch and then tighten the brass ,clamping the connection, that wont work and is wrong.be sure to understand how it needs to align

If this is the model that has the super quiet suspension, then you will need to remove the rear half of the shrouding, to get to the shift rod access plate.

Not quite, but close. There are actually two access plates, an inner and outer. BUT you do need to remove the rear midsection cover to access the rear lower unit bolt that threads down from above the unit. Seven bolts in all holding the unit on...
