Hello,
I have a 18hp Evinrude that is not firing on one cylinder. I installed new plugs and fresh gas and still no change. About mid throttle it tries to fire but just sputters. My next plan is to check the resistance on the plug wires and the point gap.

Any suggestions.
Thanks.

plan on pulling the flywheel and replacing the coils, condensers, points, and plug wires. $136 clean the carb, and have a like new engine. just did my 58 35hp starts first bump w/o choke. laingsoutboards.com has all the parts in stock, usually 3 day delivery.

1958--Guaranteed to have bad (cracked) coils unless somebody has already replaced them. It's possible that's all it needs. Approx $25 each for 2. They have them right here at iboats.

$25 sounds better

When I got the engine one of the coils was rubbing on the flywheel magnet. It scuffed the face of it up. I adjusted it back so it was even with the other one but maybe the damage was already done. Could that be the culprit?
thanks again

Moving it back may actually be your problem. The sides should be dead even with the outside edge of the coil mount posts.

Re: 1958 18hp Fast Twin

Finally figured it out. All of the ignition stuff looks fairly new. So I started trouble shooting the hardware.
I took the coils loose to check the underside for cracking and one of the plug wires was not pushed far enough into the coil to make a good solid contact. I made a starter hole with a small tack and made sure it had a solid connection. No more one cylinder for this fast twin.

Xcusme, I made sure the posts were flush, very helpful visual
tashasdaddy, scary pic I'm glad it didn't look like that when I opened it up.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. It always pays to look at the cheapest thing first.

FYI - the $138 tally that was given above was probably for EVERYTHING - ignition, waterpump, carb kit, plugs & hoses. Covers pretty much all the parts that age or can give you hassles...

that's everything, it's like a new motor, turn the key and it starts, without the choke, even when cold. 135 compression on both. original brass 3 blade prop.
