At the risk of looking like a complete idiot,Could somebody please tell me what this thing is?? HUH?? I was in the middle of stripping the boat of all steering, fuel, etc. cable and lines. They are all rotten and will need replacing. I came across this little jewel mounted on the inside of the transom. It was mounted between the ignition and the motor. Is it replaceable, and can I even find a replacement? Is it something I need? Told you guys I was a moron when it came to this stuff.Really want to see this puppy run, however...

Re: 1958 18hp Fast Twin Electric Start ??

Sure. A starter soleniod is just an electro-magnetic switch. This switch turn the power on and off to the starter motor. A small current from the key switch or starter button on the dash/helm via a small wire, energizes the electro magnet and closes the switch, connecting the two large wires. This energizes the starter motor. To test you need to jump 12v from the large terminal on the left to the small terminal left. You may be able to do this by using the starter button\switch ( it appears to be still hooked up?) Any way you should be able to hear the solenoid click.
