2 summers ago the good folks on this board helped me get my 10016 going again. i pretty much changed and rebuilt everything besides rings and pistons. last summer she ran great and idled down to a purr. this season started the same. then the old beast started to act up at low speeds. dont know if you would call it a hiccup or a cough. it just seem to stop running for a split second and then run again. over this summer it has progressivly gotten worse, where it would stall. at wot this motor runs sweet but i troll fish ,so idle is what i do 95 % of the time. the band aid i applied was adjusting the idle stop screw . this worked for awhile but it dosnt now. i removed the slow speed needle and repacked it . i adjusted the needle as perscribed and i thought things were fixed but 10 minutes in to a troll i am back to where i started. any help will be greatly appreciated.

And you can't correct it by setting the idle mixture needle a tad toward richer? "Sneezing" at idle indicates a lean condition. However, a missed beat at idle indicates an ignition miss. Suspect dirty points or a bad spark plug for that.

hi fr,
ive tried every wich way with the needle with no luck. i put in brand new points at the begining of last summer. can they get dirty in such a short time? i will try replacing the plugs first. what do you think of trying a hotter plug? if this is a no-no let me know. keep in mind that im a absolute novice when it comes to the internal combustion engine. THANKS

use the same plug. go to the engine faq forum, and use Joe Reeves carb setting, if the carb is still clean they should solve the problem. if not remove the inspection plate and look at the points.

How can they get dirty in such a short time? Easy. Grease or oil contamination. Oil from a leaking top crankshaft seal, or more likely grease from the armature plate mounting. It should be lubed very sparingly with a thin smear of EP grease. Any excess gets liquified and splattered out from vibration. Seal leakage is clear. Grease is black.

how are you t daddy? repacked needle and set as perscribed by mr reeves. better but wasnt the fix.
changed the plugs this a.m. , better but still not the fix.
F R, i do see black grease coming from what looks like just bellow the armature plate support. i also noticed a line of grease on the inside of the motor cover. evidently spread there by the spin.
on to the points. thanks again.
