howdy, i have a 1958 10 hp sportwin. runs nice at troll and nice at wot. occasionally as i turn up the throttle there is a skip and a thump as if the motor has hit a log. i have just recently rebuilt the entire motor with the help of this board.(thanks again!!!) am i looking at a carburation prob? or a gear, clutch, prob. thanks in advance.

"as if the motor has hit a log" is almost always the clutch dog slipping. I'm not sure how it's adjusted on the 10hp, but make sure the shift linkage is set to put the engine fully into forward.

If that doesn't help, you're going to want to install a new clutch dog soon before the ears on the gears get wrecked too.

Seloc doesn't say anything about the adjustment. It's usually up on the throttle handle itself - if it exists at all.

Do not attempt to adjust from the shift rod coupling.

EDIT: From the site http://1958evinrude10hp.0catch.com/EvinrudeExhaustTube.htm it appears to be there, just where the shift handle mates with the shift shaft. Note how the brass shift quadrant follower pin can be adjusted vs. the shift shaft by loosening a bolt or two.

thanx again PM! that seems to have been the fix.
one more prob though. ive got lower gear oil like substance coming out of the water intake hole. never noticed anything like this before i rebuilt this blue beast. could i have a crack in the assembly? perhaps a error in rebuilding water pump, impeller, exhaust housing, etc.
just a reminder im a mechanical cripple so go slow.
thanks in advance

just to explain"lower gear case oil like substance". the stuff that is coming out looks nothing like the lgc oil i put in. this gunk is black as tar and congealed with a whiff of gasoline to boot. i assume its lgc oil but ive been wrong before.

one more note , when i rebuilt the water pump i didnt replace the bearing houseing seal. why? i dont rember. perhaps this is the prob?

Sorry I missed that.

That sounds like just unburnt fuel/oil from the exhaust. No big deal, all 2-strokes do that to some extent. It may indicate you're running a little rich but if you idle for a while before shutting down you'll get it too.

Usually there's no need to replace the bearing housing seal unless you're resealing the lower unit.

definatly running rich. ill correct that.
does unspent fuel have the consistancy of thinned petroleum jelly? just to let you know my boating habits ,im at troll speed 9o % of the time im on the water.

not sure what ya mean by resealing the lower unit.
i did take apart the water pump and replaced the impeller ,gaskets and o rings. i do have the seal . i just over looked it . not that i want to ,but should i go back and replace it?

thanks again and please dont apoligize.
