Does anyone know the conversion part number for the lower housing seal on the prop shaft of this 1957 Evinrude 10hp sportwin. The oil lube is clearly runing out this seal. My dealer says there are no more parts that supercede this and that i will have to locate an used one.

I don't know the part number but your dealer is wrong, seals to fit your shaft are available, but you may find as I did that you can't get a seal with the correct ID and OD.
In this case get one with the correct ID and a smaller OD, then have a sleeve made to adapt it to fit. I turned my sleeve from aluminium, made the ID slightly too small (0.003" undersize) then heated it and shrunk it onto the seal, anyone with a lathe can do this for you, takes a few minutes to make.
Somewhere on the net is a list of OMC seals with sizes, but I forget where I saw it, anyone?

you can also use a speedy sleeve, They are machined out of stainless and come a huge range of sizes, check your local bearing shop, they should be able to help you out.

I have a 1957 Johnson 18hp with the same problem. Napa auto parts has a replacement seal (ID is correct, OD is not). Within an hour of runtime, the sealant holding the seal would fail and start losing lube.

After the third seal, I used a very small amount of JB Quick Weld to spot weld it into place and then filled around with sealant. So far its held for 4 hours of running with no leaks. Just be careful with the Quick Weld (make sure you only apply enough that you can grind it out when the time comes to replace the seal again).

you might try taking the old seal and the shaft to your local baering house and see what they can do.

Re: 1957 Sportwin 10hp Prop shaft seal needed

I just went through this with my 18 horse Johnson, 1957. I got a new seal, the OD was too small. I happen to have an early 60's Johnson 18 parts motor that my neighbor gave me. I took apart the bottom end to find that the bushing that holds the seal is the propper size for the seal. It works great. It seems that the best way to do this is get the bushing that fits the seal.

I'm guessing you can buy that bushing new, easier than you can get the right seal. Any body know off hand? I could call SeaWay (Near me in Seattle) and find out. That's where I got my seal, but when it didn't fit, I didn't call them to ask for a different seal - I wanted to use the motor right away, and they have bankers hours.

That's exactly what happened with me Crestliner, I ordered the seal by part number but when it arrived the OD was too small. It was the correct seal as far as OMC/Bombardier are concerned, and when I went through the list of seals not one had the correct ID and OD.
The new seal is better in one respect though than the old one, the metal shield is a much closer fit to the shaft which stops fishing line cutting the rubber seal, there's just not enough of a gap for it to get in there. Having to make or buy the bushing is inconvenient, but the end result is worth it.

I hate being a smarta$$,but if you have a chance to come to rochester,NY,you should visit mayers marina on Irondequoit bay on the Webster side. There you will see all these seals and bushings in boxes.Bill will be happy to keep you on the water.
