I have, and currently use a 1955 sea horse 25 hp. I like this motor because she starts nice in cold weather and she has the power of a Roman army, however, it is so damn loud I can be heard comming down Narragansett bay 5 miles away. I mostly like to fish at night and would like to be a little "stealthier". Ive currently picked up a couple of old models that all need some work (one of which is a 1968, 33 hp that I've posted questions on). Today I grabbed a 35 hp from 1957, $50.00 and saturday I have an opertunity at a 1959 super sea horse 35 hp for $75.00. My simple question is: does anybody use these models, are they noisy as all hell like the '55 or did they figure out how to quiet them down? I assume the 1968 33 hp is quieter but what about the two 35 hp's. Thank you

Ps forgive my spelling, my spell check doesn't work. Ronnie

I have a 1957 35hp Evinrude big twin. Yes it is sort of loud but that doesn't bother me. It isn't so loud that I would be scared to use it at night. Have you considered checking for exaust leaks on the 55 model? You half to think about it, the exaust doesn't come from the prop like on the newer motors so that is one reason it is loud. That 68 model may have the exaust in the prop, I'm not for sure though.

I think that you will find that the OMC models with the fiberglass hoods will be much more quiet than the older motors with aluminum hoods. I have a pair of '58 ERude Bigtwins and they share the same problem as your 25hp motor .... LOUD! Try running a pair of them on a boat!

My '57 35 used to be quite loud as well.It is possible however to glue some sound proofing material inside the cowling. It does not help terribly much, but it is an improvement.

remember those older motors the exhaust is above the water line. they are going to be loud. the thru hub, lessens the noise some, but 2 cycles are still noisey. even todays small motors the exhaust is above the water line, not thru hub.

Of the models listed, the '59 Super Sea Horse 35 will be the quietest..by far. It was billed as the "Super Quiet" design. Next will be the '68 33hp. The two with the metal cowlings will be the noisiest.

BTW, the '55 and '57 have what is called an "exhaust loading plate", inside the exhaust housing, below the powerhead. Those plates are noted for falling out. When that happens, the exhaust gets considerably louder. Sort of like a noisy muffler.

Speaking of noisy mufflers, your '55 and '57 are supposed to have silencers on the carburetor. Are they there? If they are missing, the carburetors and reeds make a LOUD sound.

Last but not least, the metal cowlings rattle a lot. Make sure all the rubber bumpers and stuff are present and in good condition.

Re: 1957 sea horse 35 hp, noisy?

yes i nvr owned a old motor like that has a metal hood but i would imagine they r loud but u know i didnt know they didnt have through hub exhaust for quiet performance.

i have a 1959 evinrude 10hp and it was the first year with a fiberglass cowling which indeed makes it quiet plus through hub exhaust. 59 35hp i wish i had for my pontoon since already have the controls it would be perfect since its realtively light the older motors i been trying to find. mostly everyone on my lake has all the new natuques and nitro and bass tracker boats and the fancy pontoons with the regals u know that r worth more then the lake lol.

hey man i say let u be heard i mean for me its a big old fat pontoon 20ft to be exact with no paint with a little motor thats smokes alot at trolling lol let it get in there faces cause its. priceless =D

but ya the 59 would be nice for fishing just remember thats about fuel mileage

Thats some valuable info you've given me about these motors, I find it incredible how much more power the mid to late 50's motors have than the late 60's and early 70's motors , of corse that comes with a price- not very efficient and much louder, are there any sources for breakdowns on the web for the 50's motors? the evinrude.com site only goes back to 1968. I've been searching but can find little info on them. again, thank you

Re: 1957 sea horse 35 hp, noisy?

I would go to the local marine supply and pick up the Seloc Outboard Motor Repair manual Volume I It covers 1 and 2 cylinder motors, from 1956 - 1970 There are a lot of break down diagrams and it's fairly reasonable. You may find one cheaper on Ebay, but then you have to pay shipping and wait a few days. The Ken Cook company sells manuals for earlier stuff than Seloc, if you want acurate info for your '55. They have the Johnson Service Manual: Tenth Edition, which covers Johnson outboards as far back as 1922.

Good Luck and Happy New Year.

The '57 exhaust is right behind the propeller and it really should not be that noisy

Noise??? That's the sweet music of a Big Twin at work...growls at speed, purrs at the dock.
