1957 Johnson outboard value

I bought a boat about 8 months ago that is powered by a 1957 65hp Johnson. The boat is old, but the motor had its annual and runs very well. I have only put about 10 hours on it since the annual, its been stored. My question is, what is the motor actually worth? The boat is an old 71 Caravelle and is not worth much in its present condition so I am thinking of selling both and getting something newer. I just want to get as much value for the boat and motor as I can. Thanks for the help.

No way to give you a value for your motor. It's "whatever the market will bear". Try searching the internet, classified newspaper ads, Craigs list, those sort of places and you might get an idea. Outboard motors don't have "set" re-sale value, it all depends on who wants it and how bad they want it.

Well, its pretty obvious you want to get as much money as you can. No doubt about that.

The most I'll pay for a non-running outboard is $100.
but for a 50's engine I wont pay more than $50

Other say they wont even pay $50 for a non-runner.


Anyone wanting to fix this boat & engine combo will have to put thousands into it to get it water-worthy again.

Could you buy a better/newer/nicer boat that doesnt need anything for the thousands it would cost? Probably.

Without seeing it, Im guessing a good price would be $200-500 for a project combo.

For starters, the motor can't be a 1957 if it's a 65hp. Biggest motor Johnson made in 1957 was a 35hp. Can you give us the model number?

Johnson didn't make a 65hp in 1957 - the biggest that year was a 35hp. Perhaps a 1967?

VX/VXH-14 = 1968 V4, 4 cylinder
65ES*** = 1972, 1973 Inline 3 cylinder looper.

Those are your oldest choices. Unless it isn't 65 hp.
