I just picked up a beater aluminum boat, rusty trailer and 2 (two) Evinrude 5.5hp Fisherman O/Bs for $100. One 'Rude is pretty clean and already showed signs of life with a squirt of fuel in the intake. She ran about 3 seconds and actually sounded quite smooth. The second one is locked up and had a mouse nest in the cover- what a mess. Definitely a parts motor. These engines are identical and have the all metal clam-shell style covers. I have gotten to the serial/model numbers but will to find out exactly what year they are. Boat is a 1969 Rich aluminum V-hull. Don't know brand of trailer- it's a tilt trailer though. I needed a winter project so I'll gut the boat and redo the interior, strip and paint the trailer, rebuild it completely and get the engine cleaned up. I'll sell her next spring and use the money for a windlass for my ProLine. LOL
My question after that rambling (sorry) is how to drop the lower unit. 4 bolts hold it to the midsection but the shift rod is there and I do not know where it disconnects. I cannot see anywhere near the shift lever or anywhere else that I would have access to a set screw or pin. Obviously I have no manual as yet but will find one. Just wanted to know if anyone knew how to drop the L/U. It's been sitting since '96 so a water pump kit is of course required before any running occurs. (Edit) it appears powerhead removal is necessary. Advice?
Thanks for the help.
