I have a 1957 Evinrude motor. It runs good but needs clutch dog replaced. I goes into gear ok, but when I give it some throttle it slips in and out of gear. I do have a new clutch dog for it. Is it easy to change? I have never done one before. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks, Mike

Changing the clutch dog is the easy part, it is just a matter of opening her up and replacing the part. Resealing the gearcase afterwards is the part that takes a bit knowledge.

I would have a reseal kit ready before you get into it, that way you can reseal the gearcase while you are at it. If it has already been recently done, you will bare minimum need new spagheti seal for the skeg halves and some 3M 847 to use as a sealant.

What HP are we talking about before we start here?

Hi Outboardmotorjunkie. High Trim is right, changing the dog itself is very easy, you simply slide the old one off the propshaft then slide on the new one, but you will have to remove the lower unit and open the gear case, which you will then need to reseal. I just ordered a reseal kit for my '66 20 hp myself. The reseal kit was less than $20 w/shipping from right here at iboats. Here are some great links that can walk you through the entire job. There's a link and couple vids. Great motor you got there. One of the all time greats. Good luck. Holler if you get stuck.

Great motor, I just recently restored the same one. Send some pics if you can. Be sure to ask for any specific advice.

Good luck

Sweet. An 18 electric model. The 1957 Line is my favorite in the Johnsons and Evinrudes. I've had a few of these in the past and they're great motors. I just just up a Big Twin of this year, last night. Fix this baby up, and you'll have a motor that will last for years.
