Did these come with charging system? I just bought this on Ebay, I thought it would be good to power my 1963 Sears 14' aluminum jon boat. It will sit beside the 1954 Minn Kota trolling motor. Should be good. Was $560 too much to pay for a good runner?
Thanks,
Chris

Yes, some of those were set up with generators and starters. Typically, it was the Javelins and Larks.:D

How do you tell the difference between the 18hp models? This one started with no starter, no generator, no elec. choke. It is a 15020 model. What would be the model name?
Thanks,
Chris

Your 57 18 hp is an FD motor. Great runners and easy to maintain...very reliable. There should be a metal plate on the top of the transom clamp or on one side of the leg under the powerhead with the model/serial number on it. I think 57's were FD-11, but I may be mistaken.

18s never had any kind of charging system. Anyhow, if you are expecting to maintain a charge on a battery by running and outboard and a trolling motor, forget it. You would have to run the gas motor many hours to put back what the trolling motor takes out in a few hours.

with electric start, i'd say no. $560 is pretty decent. The electric start kit retails for about $500.
