1956 Johnson Javelin reverse only how to fix?

I bought a 56 Crestliner with an original Johnson javlin30 that runs good but only goes in reverse. something to do with a shift dog? how do i repair it.thanks scot 5858081662 scot104@yahoo.com belmont ny

Remove the wee plate on the side of the exhaust housing.---Operate the shift lever and report what you see in there.-----Turn prop while shifting.

I concur - very few things can cause it to not shift at all. Disconnected shift rod would be high on my list. Second would be that someone inadvertently removed the shift fork pivot screw in the skeg and didn't replace it correctly.

As racerone noted, turn the propeller while shifting manually. DO NOT turn the motor over with the propeller.

these are the conclusions I have come to also. so as soon as it stops raining and freezing I will get the motor in for an inspection. I am hoping the shift rod just slipped loose. will up date. tnx
