I am trying to get a 1956 Johnson 3hp up and running after sitting for twenty years. Gas was left in the tank during that time. I used the ideas on this board to clean the tank but the fuel filter will not allow fuel to flow through it. Is there any way to clean it or where can I buy a replacement. It is a solid piece that screws into the bottom of the tank and the fuel shutoff valve attatches to it. Give me some direction!!!!!
Thanks everyone! :)

I'm not too familiar with that engine, but couldn't you blast the filter/valve with carb cleaner and/or compressed air to flush out the gunk?

I've tried carb cleaner as well as soaking it in clean gas and then using compressed air but no luck!!

Hey, Gone. I think I remember that li'l filter. Isn't it a cylindrical thing about 3/8" diameter and 1.5" long that fits up into the fuel tank when you screw the outlet valve assembly into the tank?

If so (I can't find it in my manual) it is brass wire mesh. Let's think for a moment about what is gumming it up. You have tried solvents that should have dissolved varnish (did you try paint remover?). Lets assume that it is corrosion, not varnish, and try TARN-X on it.

If all else fails, a lawnmower repair shop may have an exact replacement.

Good luck.
Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Hey Thanks J.B. You were right on target about the filter. I will try some Tarn-X on it and see if that clears things up. Thanks for your time.

Dan :)
