I am in the process of getting my fastwin 15 up and running. I was doing a little research about replacing the coils and found a sierra part number of 18-5181. My question is: Is this the right part number and are both coils the same part number? The two on my motor are different sizes and colors, which I just chalked up to being different brands but wanted to make sure before I ordered replacements.

That is the correct part number for Sierra coils and you will need two of the same. Different colors could just be different makes but even different makes should be very close in size.

The coils on those 2 cylinder Johnnyrudes were not changed from the early '50s through the early '70s.

+1. The original coils were famous for going bad, but the replacement parts are a 1000 times better and more reliable. Once replaced, you shouldn't have to mess with the m ever again. Be sure you TWIST the spark plug wires on to the coil posts rather than just jamming them on there. You may as well replace the wires themselves too with 7mm COPPER CORE spark plug wires. Here's a great link that can walk you through and entire rebuild of a vintage, OMC "universal magneto".
