I was the lucky recipient of a free 1956 Big Twin. From what I could garner from this site based on the model number, this is a 30hp model. It's quite a large engine! From what I have learned so far, the 25924 was an electric start model. I cracked the cowling and had a peak inside and was quite surprised that there wasn't a starter to be seen. No wiring, soleonoid or start mount to support that his had a starter to begin with. It may have been converted to a NOS nothing somewhere along the line. The cowling was repainted white and red in the Johnson schema.....really. Go figure. So, all of the identifiers are lost. The recoil works, and the compression in incredible. Electric start wood be nice to have if possible. I have attached a few pics of this beast. Can anyone tell if this was/should/had the electric start capability? JonB.

dont know for sure but as you can see, the flywheel will take a starter, but it looks like a johnson block, with evinrude parts bolted on. there should be an aluminum plug on the block with some numbers that may help identify exactly what you have.

What he has is a real JohnnyFrankenRude!

The cost to add electric start may be cost prohibitive. Could likely buy another motor that already has the starter and necessary components installed.

So, this might be a Frankenrude? I'll go see if I can find that plug you mention, and see what I can glean any information off of it. Would Evinrude or Johnson produce a hybrid like this? Im headed out to the barn and have a look. Stay tuned...story at 11. JonB

The starboard view clearly shows where the starter and bracket would be, if it had not been removed. It also shows the electric choke solenoid that goes with the starter.

So, you have an Electric start Evinrude, minus the starter. You also have a Johnson powerhead grafted in there.

Your electric cable is missing. Also missing is your junction box, which contains the starter solenoid. Also missing is the electric cable that goes to the dashboard, and the start / choke buttons.

When you get the numbers off the Johnson powerhead, you will know if it truly is a 30hp.....

your hybrid wasnt made by omc, it was made by someone with two motors, and enough good parts between both, to make a working motor.

I found a number stamped on the forward base of the block: 375760. Im not sure where to look for the 'plug' that may contain identifying informaton. What would these plugs have stamped on them? A serial number, or the horsepower rating? While I was out there I did a compression check using the dedicated armstrong starter (pull rope), and was able to get 110lbs top and 109lbs bottom. This was quite a cardiac workout for an ol guy like me. Fortunately, OMC had the foresight to provide a built-in magneto supplied defibrilater from either of the 2 plugwires to start the heart as well as the engine. Yes..it has great spark. All this being said, this ol gal might even run.
