I have a 1956 evinrude that I just got running and sometimes it pumps water, other times it doesn't. I am planning on pulling the impeller out and throwing in a new one. I have had some people tell me that I must remove the powerhead to remove the lower unit. Is this true? If so, what are the procedures for replacing the impeller? Thanks...

it should havg 1"x2" plate 1/2 way up on the leg of the motor. this is access to the shift linkage connector. remove plate, and loosen bottom screw, do not remove. then after removing the bolt to the lower unit it should just drop out. this linkage has to go back together the same as it came out. be sure to line up water pipe. may have to remove plugs, and rotate flywheel to get splines to line up.

Well, I got the impeller out and it needs replacement. However, there is another problem. The impeller key is rusted into the driveshaft and it broke off flush with the surface. I am going to try to drill it out and see if I can get all of the material out of there. Any other thoughts on what to do?

ohoh... be careful here... the older driveshafts are hard to come by... I would try a dremel or other rotary tool.

hold everything. the 15 has a pin not a key. it's like a 1/8 inch pin. that engages the impeller.

Well, I just got it out. It needed to be drilled out because the pin was still broken flush with the surface. I was able to put it in an end mill and drill it out. Just out of curiousity, why wouldn't a regular key work just as well as the pin?

'Cause it is drilled for a pin. Drilling is cheaper than milling. Pins are cheaper than keys. Bean counters, you know. Save 10 cents per motor times 100,000 motors, lessee what's that? Ten thousand dollars?

Sorry, it was miscommunication on my part. By key, I just meant that it had the flat vertical part that locks into the groove on the impeller. The correct term is pin, I just used key because in my mind a pin is just a straight 1/8" rod. I drilled the hole back out to 1/8, and now the pin fits in fine.
