I am starting to rebuld a newly obtained 1956 30 hp Johnson model RD-18. This motor is a manual start and I want to turn it into electric start. In doing so I will have to change the flywheel etc, will a 1955 25 (RDE-17) hp fly wheel with ring gear fit the 1956 model? I guess while I'm at it what other parts will interchange properly? I am aware that the power heads are different in respect to compression, pistons etc. Also will a 20 hp lower unit fit this 30 hp properly? Any help in this matter would be appreciated.

Re: 1956 30 hp

Hi R.Bushie,
Okay, yes the flywheel will interchange. The starter will also interchange IF you swap out the bracket with it. The '55 25hp used a 6V system and the starter bracket was different to accomodate the larger starter motor. Personally, I would find a 12V starter and the proper bracket to mount it. You can only use brackets from '56, '57, and '58 (base model only) as they incorporate the cowling bushing, too.
The lower unit from a 20hp will NOT fit the 30hp. The unit from a '55 25hp will. Many other parts from the '55 will interchange, too.
- Scott
