Can anyone help me with wiring a key switch to solenoid to starter on a 1956 model 15hp Johnson? I have the switch, solenoid, and the starter is on the motor. What I need to know is how to wire it all together. There are no wires except on the starter at this point. Also can I use an after market key switch and solenoid from an auto parts store?

Yes, the '56 15's had an electric start option. Rare though!

Positive battery cable to IN side of solenoid.

Negative battery cable to block.

Short heavy gauge cable from OUT side of solenoid to starter post terminal.

16 ga. wire from small post of solenoid to switch - usually the solenoid post closest to the IN side.

16 ga. wire from large IN post of solenoid to switch.

16 ga. wire from small GROUND post of solenoid to block - ground post is usually the one closest to the OUT side of the solenoid.

Can I use an after market switch and solenoid or are these special?

Use a marine solenoid. Does not necessarily have to be for a Johnson. Style uses two large posts and two small posts...
Having just added electric start to a motor this weekend, 14 ga. wire might be better than the 16 ga. I had originally recommended...

DO NOT attempt to wire in a battery ignition (car) type ignition switch!! If you do suceed, it will literally blow up the coils in the motor. You must use a magneto type switch. Or just use a push button and forget about it turning off the motor.
