1955 Gale Buccaneer 5D11B Compression

I just checked the compression on my 55 buc 5hp, and it only read out at 50psi. Is that normal? It seems a little low to me, but the motor winds up well and pushes my 14' jon with my wife and I at 9mph.

Also, how the heck do you replace the head gasket on this motor? There are no bolts on the outside of the head. The only bolts I can see on the powerhead are the screws for the side covers.

Sounds low to me too. But it runs OK? Great, run some carbon cleaner through it and run it.

There is no head or head gasket. It is what is called a blind cylinder. Pistons are inserted from the crankcase end. Never take the side covers off. They are extremely difficult, if not impossible, to reseal.

50 psi is very low, are you sure the gauge is good? Most engines at 50 will not start.


I think I remember 2 strokes that did not have a removable head, we had them on go carts when I was a kid, they were also air cooled. Don't know much about a 55 buc.
