Re: 1955 fastwin 15 hp. Questions

15014 is a '55 15hp. Fuel/Oil mix was 16:1 but later changed to 24:1. Use 87 octane gas and TC-W3 outboard oil. No need for additives - leaded gas never did anything for a two stroke but gunk it up, it's much happier on unleaded.
Lower unit lube is OMC/BRP "HiVis" or equivalent 80/90 weight outboard gearcase lube available from walmart, etc. Nothing special about that.

Alcohol can sometimes be hard on a few parts, namely the rubber fuel hoses and the carb's cork float. You can get a new float with a carb kit from your local dealer, and hoses from the same (or anywhere else for that matter). You can also get a rebuild kit for the pressure tank from the dealer if that craps out on you.

Grab an extra filter or two as well since the alcohol can clean out the tank, lines, etc, and clog it up.

Lots of parts are available both aftermarket and OEM. Not a whole lot for the engine itself, but ignition parts, impellers, lower unit rebuild kits, carb kits, etc, are all easily had.

Do yourself a favor and get a decent service manual. Reprints of the original factory manual can be purchased from kencook.com, theoutboardwizard.com, maxrules.com, etc. A less expensive solution is to order the OEM manual on CD from acmeoutboards.com.

Hope that helps!

Re: 1955 fastwin 15 hp. Questions

Thank You, my head's spinning. You answered all my questions.

I am haveing a bit of trouble finding the manual. It seam like i can only find manuals starting at 1956 not 1955.

Also, I heard that Napa auto has evinrude parts, is that right?

The fuel tank was hissing. Can I use simple gasket material and permatex .

Can I really use a 50 year old outboard with out worry?

Thanks again

Re: 1955 fastwin 15 hp. Questions

The manual's starting at 1956 are aftermarket ones - Seloc and Clymer. Avoid them, they are very general. Although the factory (OEM) ones are written for professionals while the aftermarket ones are written for a general audience, they are far superior and what is not in them you can find here.
That said, there is little difference between a '55 and a '56 15hp. But neither the clymer nor the Seloc one cover the 15hp very well since it was discontinued in '56.
(EDIT: I should clarify this. The engine itself was discontinued for recreational engines but lived on through the 60s as the commercial "WorkTwin"/"WorkHorse" in export markets before being reintroduced briefly to the recreational market in about '68. The midsection, lower unit, etc was essentially unchanged and the '57+ 18hp/20hp/25hp engine was bolted onto it. )

NAPA has the same aftermarket parts Iboats and others sell. These include most of what I've listed above. Which is to say common replacement parts.

The pressure tank needs to be well sealed. You can get rebuild kits for them from the dealer or places online like laingsoutboards.com. They have everything you need for an old pressure tank. The gasket in it is partly operated on by the primer so you need rubberized gasket material rather than just a paper gasket. But hang on to that for other stuff - you can make most any other gasket if you need to.

Many here, myself included, still run 50 year old engines with no worries whatsoever. They were built very well back then and like any outboard, if taken care of last a very long time. Really that's the most important thing by far. Most critical is to service the cooling system every few seasons.

An active member here, tashasdaddy, runs his '55 15hp quite a bit and thinks very highly of it.

Re: 1955 fastwin 15 hp. Questions

Paul thanks for the mention, been in the Keys the last week. Dutchoven, as mentioned i have a '55 15hp rude, run it all the time, on a 14' Lonestar Commander, i put remote controls, and ezy guide stick steering at the center seat. What a boat, great for fishing, or just going out an playing around. i've had boats for the last 45 years, and this has become may favorite. I've had great success finding parts at laingsoutboards.com, and Jeff is a pleasure to work with. i just rebuilt a 2nd pressure tank with a kit from Jeff, and was very easy. i too have had trouble finding an OEM manual. i am using an Intertec manual (OS1-11) at the present time. my father had a '50 15hp rude we learned to ski behind, and when i fouind this motor i had to have it. since i've set this boat up, i won several bets that you can ski behind it.(of course you have to have an experienced skier) you have a fanstatic little power house. use Joe Reeves carb adjustments, in the engine faq section, i got mine set up in a barrel, and then fine tuned it on the water, it will troll all day and never cough or sputter, and the run like a wild cat. always starts 2nd pull when cold, and usually 1st after warm up, work the choke when starting cold, so you don' t have to wear your arm out, save the strength for the fish. Good Luck, keep us posted.

I am excited Captain. Thank you for your inputhere!

I confess, I dont know how to use the motor. There two knobs on the front. One, I think is a fast idle and the other a rich mixture?

I know the choke. When do I turn the other knobs?

as Paul said, those are the carb adjustments, follow the directions in the referenced thread. make sure when running the motor leg is about 1/2 submerged in water, in a barrel of garbage can. keep the hose running as the motor is going to blow water out of the can.
