I have had an overheating problem with my 5hp buc, so I replaced the water pump with the retrofit kit available at the dealer. The original impeller was about 2 inches in diameter, and the new kit came with a plastic housing and an impeller about 1 inch in diameter. The motor still doesn't seem to pump enough water, and still overheats at WOT. The passages are clear, it just doesn't seem to be pulling enough water. I pulled the lower unit off today, and the impeller looks great with little to now wear. I checked the passages again, and made sure the cooling pipe is locked into place on both the powerhead and the impeller housing, but it still doesn't pump enough. Is this retrofit kit junk, or is something else wrong?

I have heard nothing but good reports about the new kit. Most people say it pumps better than the old ones ever did. I haven't personally tried one yet.

Don't know what to say. I suppose you have forced water up through the tube with a hose to see if it is open? Some of those motors had a restrictor in the water tube, don't know if that applies to this one. Was the old impeller shattered? Maybe a piece of it stuck in a passage somewhere? Are you sure it's overheating? There are areas on that motor that get mighty hot to the touch. Whatever you do, don't remove the side plates off the powerhead. They are virtually impossible to reseal.

what is the temp on the motor? Do you THINK its over heating because you touched it and your hand is warm or is the motor actually burning. make sure all your water passeges are clear for the water to pass through easily. and what size boat to you have it on? Does the motor have to labor all the time??? hope this helps somewhat.

The other impeller was not broken so I don't think there are any pieces clogged. I think it is overheating because the water gets really hot out the exhaust, and if I run it at WOT, after about 20 minutes it will start missing and wanting to quit running. If I only run at 3/4 throttle then it doesn't seem to ever have a problem. I am running it on a 14' jonboat, so it has quite a bit of load. Should I just run it at 3/4 throttle and not worry about it?

try running the engine with the engine cover off see if there is any difference. Also try running it at 3/4 throttle see if it still gets hot.
