Does anyone know the part number on the clutch dog and forward gear? Are the 18 hp same parts? An this may be a good one but the serial number has the 2nd number scratched out an the welch plug has lines crossing the numbers out, someone told me that it was a 15hp changed to a 18hp. Can anyone confirm this?

Re: 1955 15hp Evinrude, clutch dog, 15 converted to 18??

Converting a '55 15 to an 18hp could not be done within reason since the 18hp has a bigger cube block to produce the other 3 horses. It seems since some of the 70's and 80's OMC motors of slightly different hp use the same block but different carbs/exhaust/etc. , everybody thinks you can increase hp with all of 'em.
Since my 'puter crashed recently, I lost all my pdf manuals, so I can't help you on the part #, but I'm sure someone will come along. Due to the costs of new parts, you might consider a used lower unit if you can find one without the same problem that you have.
GOod luck,

According to my parts manuals they did not make an 18 hp in 55, went from 15 to 25 hp, and the gear sets are different.
If you had some model numbers I could try and cross reference them for you.

375711 Clutch dog fits 15hp 1955 & 1956 And 18hp 1957
305191 Clutch dog fits 18hp 1958 thru 20hp 1971

After 55 years and no model number, it is hard to tell what is in there.

That's not even a 15hp model number - that's a 1957 10hp model number... Quite possible someone replaced the clamp bracket at some point - does the model number on the tag match the model number on the cylinder block welch plug?

In my parts book for my 1955 15 HP Fastwin they come as a set front rear and the drivshaft gear as part number 375844 but i also have a 1963 18 hp Johnny with what seems to me to have the same lower unit and the part number would be 378079 Hope this helps . Maybe FR or other another experienced tech guy can confirm this :)

Also if you want a PDF parts manual for your 1955 Fastwin i have it and its just a little over 4 megs , i could email it to you if you want.

When I check out ebay for the clutch dog it looks like this number 329795 in shape but Iam thinking its smaller in dimension, with this number that it is supposed to be 375711 it does not have the same psychical appearance. Did they change the style of it?

Minor change in size and splines. Can't tell by looking at pictures.

Re: 1955 15hp Evinrude, clutch dog, 15 converted to 18??

Well I got one coming in the mail so I hope it fits, I think Iam going to try it with just the clutch dog an original forward gear. I called twin city for a seal kit for lower unit an they really couldn't help they just said they have them for a 58 18hp so I figured I would try it, got it last week an the seal I need is under the water pump an it appears to be the same seal however the prop shaft seal is not even close but that was supposedly replace. The shift rod O ring seems like it should work but not positive, and I assume the spaghetti rubbers are all the same diameter. Its funny but the water pump was installed wrong one finger was swept the wrong direction, has new ignition parts but was running on one cylinder, the guy just pushed the old corroded wires back in an one coil arced to itself an melted the plastic where the wire plugs in. Would that damage the coil? I have spark now but its not as solid as the other coil, however it runs better now, short of idle yet. Hoping that is the dirty carb an adjustment. Where can I get new wires that will fit?

For the wires, search out local auto parts stores for SOLID core spark plug wire, used to come on a roll, and cut to lenth.
