This is the underside of the pull start. The actuator thingys aren't equally spaced. Took me awhile to figure this out.
second pic is the top of it, it hooks to the carb and when in the down position, locks it from being pulled. What is it for? Can i disable it?

I think this is it ... in the book btw Johnson service manual you need to service oldies..:)
design intent for your safety .. I would not disable it but it is your motor.

my Merc 7.5hp 1976 does the same thing... I can not pull the starter if not in neutral ! keeps one from flying overboard if the engineis started in gear at a high speed setting. !!

It is a crude mechanical device to prevent you from starting the motor with throttle advanced too far.----A simple device that you can examine / fix by looking at it.----Much simpler to trouble shoot than hidden electronic switches.----Yes , you can take it off and throw it away.

It was simple engineering of the day.------Have you weighed this 25 HP motor.----Have you compared the weight to a modern motor ?----Surprised by the comparison ????
