Hi I recently bought a 1952 Johnson 25hp that I made using parts from my 1954 Electric start RDE-16 Johnson 25hp, I broke the key on the crankshaft on the 1952 after driving it for awhile after having the flywheel not torqued properly. I would like to know what newer outboards use the same key for the crankshaft to flywheel, is the 1955 model the same part number? Is there a number I can give to my local OMC dealer that they can use to order the part? Thanks

That was the number I found for the 1955 model, is there a website that gives a detailed list of parts numbers for these old outboards? Is the 1955 powerhead the same as the 1952?

Similar to but not 100% same as. If you go to Ask-A-Member forum at www.aomci.org and ask, somebody there probably will post the parts book. Or give you one by e-mail

This outboard keeps breaking the key, how would you suggest I tighten the flywheel down to the recommended torque? 100ft lbs correct?

No!!! 60-65 foot pounds. 100 may spread or break the hub. Both the hub and shaft tapers must be in good condition, and clean and dry. Then torque to spec. Use a strap wrench to hold the flywheel while you wrench on it.

The tapers must be a perfect fit.---Use some fine valve grinding compound to lap them together.--After that procedure you will not shear the key again.
