I can find no information on this motor. Is it water cooled? Where are the intake and outtake ports? Can an auxillary tank be attached? What can I use to remove shellac from the carb and fuel tank? Please help

Howdy.

Let us know the model number of your engine. It may not be a '52.

You need a manual, and to read it carefully before you do anything else. You can get an afetrmarke manual by clicking on Repair Manuals at the bottom of the page.

Good luck. :)

Hi Icke
Yes your TN28 is water cooled. It has a water pump located at the lower unit. Your model also has a neutral, this is a nice feature. I suppose there is a way to do just about anything, but there should no reason to hook up a remote tank. A good careful cleanning should do just fine. Be careful with solvents, some parts like the carb float and others will not like some chemicals. Most parts for this model can still be had. It uses a 24:1 fuel mix and 90wt gear oil in the gear case. On this model the water pick-up is located on the front of the exhaust out let. You should see a screen there. There is also a small hole in a bronse elbow fitting, this is were the tell-tale spits out. Manuals do exist for these, I don't know where. I'd try the library first. They my not have an OEM book. But Just about any old outboard book should work. These were, and still are fairly popular units. If you would like a parts break bown, post your email add. and I'll send you a copy.

Yes. The model TN-28 was made in 1952 and 1953. Your local library should have a copy of the Johnson Service Manual, which covers service and repair of many models.

Many parts can be ordered by your local NAPA Auto Parts Store.

Other parts can usually be found at www.twincityoutboard.com.

Good luck. :)

Get the tank off and clean it this way:
pour in some fresh gas and slosh, slosh, slosh. Discard. pour in some berrymans carb cleaner and a length of chain (keep one end in one hand) and shake, shake, shake. pour out and repeat until you don't get any gunk out of it. Now repeat with fresh gas. Now hose it out with water. Now flush with real hot water, followed by vinegar...yeah that real strong white vinegar. Hose it out again. Now put a bottle of rubbing alcohol in and shake, shake, shake. Discard and air dry or blow it dry with a hair dryer. Now she should be spic and span and ready for fresh gas. Oh yeah, take care with the mesh filter on the fuel line intake inside the tank...keep and reuse it if you can after cleaning it up.
