1952 3hp evinrude 2 cycle, can I use two head gaskets?

When I removed the head to this engine I really scratched the block. Broke five of the six head bolts. After getting the bolts out I had the head milled and now the pistons just barely touch the head with one new gasket on it not tighten , can I get away with putting two on it? Should a file a little material off the piston? Any thoughts what might work?

thanks

Paul

I have never worked on that engine, but have on a lot of older motors where replacement parts are not readily available, if at all. Personally I can see no problem with a double head gasket, but do not touch the pistons. Because if you alter the pistons & later have a problem, you will then need pistons along with a head.

On some of the engines that were designed to also run on Kerosene in the underdeveloped countries, they indeed used 2 head gaskets.

It was the block that got milled, not the head. Sorry

should I use anything on the gasket, between the two so that they bind together or just tighten to spec?

Tighten to spec, then run it and re-torque. Might want to do that a couple of times

How much was milled off the block? The reason for asking is two gaskets will decrease the compression ratio. It might be better to make a copper gasket with thickness equal to the milled amount and use one original type head gasket with a thin coating of non-hardening Permatex on both sides of the copper. At least the C/R will be closer to normal and so will the engine power. Just a thought.

I have it all back together and it runs just fine. I tighten the head a couple times as instructed and each time it did get a little tighter. I now have to find a boat to test it on. It idled for an hour while I mowed the grass but in a barrel. The gear box oil did foam so a little water is getting in.

A little water is not uncommon on these old guys. You could reseal the gear case, but some folks just kind of resign themselves to having a bit of leak and just change the oil a couple times a season. You might get lucky and just be able to put some new, white, nylon washers around the DRAIN/VENT screws to stop the leak. I use a 3hp on my 15', aluminum, flat-back canoe and it's perfect, almost gets it on plane. Happy boating!

To seal one of these lower units, there is only the drive shaft seal and the prop shaft seal left, after the plug gaskets. I would go ahead and replace those, to stop the leak.

just curious pal50, did you do a compression test after you got it up and running?

wow! just two more gaskets is well worth it. you may be able to find them here at iboats too.

yea, there isn't too much, to one of these lower units. Also, there is the o-ring, where the prop hub slips into the gearcase, but if sealed right, that is less likely to leak, than the two seals. On the diagram, you'll see items 9, 19 and 22.
