1951 evinrude fastwin 14 hp gaskets 4441

I have an Evinrude 14 hp motor from the early 50's. It runs but it sputters and I can see milky oil driping out of the bottom of the power head.

Does anybody know where the water could get into the power head and if there are gaskets availeble to fix this problem? Can I cut in my own gaskets? Thanx!

Can you be more specific on the location? It is probably just unburned fuel in the exhaust.

The covers on the sides of the block are shown as separate parts in the parts list, but it is advised to Never take them off. They are virtually impossible to reseal. Perhaps somebody has already taken them off and that's why they are leaking???

F_R With todays 3M 847 product, think it would remove the warning to never remove them???Back then sealers wernt up to todays standards

It was mostly below the power head by the shift linkage but I actually saw some on the top of the carb too. I'll look at it closer tomorow night and get back to you with a more detailed description and I'll try to get some pics!

The milky on top of the carb is likely from the vent and means you have moisture in your fuel - not uncommon with today's ethanol "enhanced" gas.

Milky oil down low is usually unburnt fuel/oil mixed with cooling water.

How do I replace the O rings in the fuel line connect? I know those damn brass bushings have to come out somehow.....

Oh, I'm sure there probably is a modern sealer that will work. I think I'd look for something a bit more high temperature than 847 though. My point is that the covers will leak if you don't have a suitable sealant. There normally isn't any reason to take them off unless the motor has been cooked from severe overheating.

If it's leaking white oily goo (normal discharge) around the base (my 20hp was at last year) it's the powerhead base gasket. I changed mine and it worked great.

FR, where did you get this diagram? I have the same engine and have never found a parts manual or diagrams for it?

Yep, one of those wedge type motors. This was a rule in the old 5hp Gales, 12hp Gales and the 14hp Fastwin. Believe it or not, the old 12hp Sea King direct drive model had pretty much the same powerhead as the old 14hp Fastwin.

yea, the Sea King built a 12hp Direct drive model, that had the same power head as the 14hp Fastwin and the Gale Buccaneer 12hp was designed more like the old 15hp Fastwin and both were built by Gale. Pretty wild huh?

What's even funnier, is that Sea King had the 3hp, but it was nothing like the JW. Infact it was a single
