I just did a tune-up for a fellow on a 1955 Elgin 5.5. It's one of the West Bend built motors (predecessor to Chrysler). Anyway, I found that the coils, made by Wico, are easily replaced by OMC standard issue coils, OEM part number 582995, Sierra part number 18-5181. The laminates are rivited to the armature, so you need to press the OMC lams out and press the coil onto the existing lams. Also have to lengthen the primary wire a bit to reach the condenser, but outside of that it worked beautifully!

Also, many of the 1950s small West Bend/Elgin recoil parts are common to Chrysler s up into the 1970s. I replaced the spring and some small parts in the recoil with off-the-shelf Chrysler parts and it works fine.

Hope that's useful to someone...

- Scott
