Can someone tell me what the adjustment [bent rod/needle valve] is on the lower front right of the engine is for?
It goes from the carb to the back of the engine block. What would be an initial setting for this valve? The engine starts [now and then] but will not keep running.

That is the idle speed fuel/air mixture adjustment. It is pretty sensitive. 5/8 turn open from lightly seated will be very close. Fine tune at idle after warmed up.

That is a third port engine with a rotary valve. That will give you something to ponder on and study up on. Not that it has anything to do with the present running problem.
