OK I have this EvinRude magento. It is about 3 1/2 feet tall and weighs over 100 pounds. On the top part it reads "EVINRUDE MAGENTO *newline* PATD'D U.S.A. MAR 23 1915 *newline* JULY 20 1915 - JAN 25 1916" and on thew bottom base it reads "EVINRUDE MOTOR CO. MILWAUKEE NO 1" Can anyone tell me anything about this? I woudl really appreciate it. I woudl like to know exactly what is it and if possible what it is worth. Thanks so much. Jim

Hello.<br />It sounds like the 4 cycle opposed twin cylinder 4 horse engine. It was a real dud.It had a distributor that let both cylinders fire alternately. But you still had to mix oil in your fuel. Lots of people called it the "evinrude boat anchor"<br />It's serial numbers are: AA/Twin (4 cycle)#53420 to #54415 for 1916 and #54416 to #54819 for 1917 so overal only about 1400 of these engines were ever made.<br />How much is it worth? To me maybe a hundred, to others it is a treasure, yet others would see junk iron. This engine is not mentioned in the price list of the "old outboard book". This may mean that there have been none for sale. If Chinewalker confirms what I think then you can take this for granted.

Are we talking Magento, or magneto? Are we talking about an outboard motor? I know a 100 lb. magneto can't be right, but and old flywheel magnet charger could. I have a book showing a charger for the old Ford model T that would weigh that much.

Let's start with a basic question - how many cylinders does this motor have? Is there one cylinder pointing into the boat, or are there two running parallel to the transom? There should be an ID plate on the gas tank (assuming it's the original tank and the plate is present).<br />Can you post a photo?<br />- Scott

It would seem that it must be a power generator (?). Gotta say I've never seen one or heard of one. It's gotta be kind of rare. Post your question over at the antique outboard club's website, www.aomci.org

There are some real old timer Evinrude guys over there.

Looking at the base it looks like a pump of some sort.I believe the magneto reference refers to the ignition system probably under the flywheel.
Evinrude did make a fire pump I believe in the 30s but nothing like that.

Cool. It's a knuckle buster what-cha-ma-call-it gadget!

And I concur with FR. Post pics on the aomci.org website.

Very interesting. I agree it must be a water pump.

It does look like a water pump. They wouldn't cast in the serial number. That must be a model number or something. It looks like it is missing the carburator. Does it turn over at all?
