I have an 18hp Tohatsu with a 9.9 tag. Is there any other place on the motor that would tell me the correct model and serial number? I am having trouble when looking to purchase parts.

How do you know that the engine is an 18? That type of foil tag tends to come apart in pieces if someone tries to remove it...There is a serial number on the engine block.

Re: 18hp marked as 9.9

The person I bought the motor from said that it was an 18hp marked to 9.9 by the dealer so it could be run on HP restricted lakes. Here in Pa most State lakes were only permited 9.9 max HP when he purchased the motor in 1995.
I will look on the block for info. I attached this picture of the motor, it looks big to be a 9.9.View attachment 115416
Thanks for the reply.

Ok looked on the block and this is mwhat I found. 86401 was stamped on top of the block on the left hand side looking at the motor from the rear. Also 60A was on the opposite side. Thanks for the help.

Since the serial numbers match, you likely have what you see on the model tag - a 9.9C. The 18 had a completely different block. That said, it is possible to have upgraded the motor to a 15 (not an 18). That was done a lot back in the day. The "secret" is swapping the throttle cam for the 15 hp part, allowing full opening of the carb at WOT, in sync with full magneto advance.

Just for info reasons where did you go to match serial numbers? I know the numbers are the same on the block and the model tag but is there some offical way to determine engine size like contacting Tohatsu? And if this is a 9.9 with a carb upgrade to a 15 and not an 18 how will I know what carb rebuild kit to order. The motor runs fine but I like to buy critical replacement parts to have on hand when needed. The older the motor gets I worry about not being able to find parts.

Thanks

Re: 18hp marked as 9.9

You verified that the model tag and block agree, so I believe you have a 9.9C There is no carb upgrade; you can run the throttle cam for a 15 to get 15 hp. Regardless, you use the same carb kit (if needed): CARBURETOR REPAIR KIT: 9.9C ~ 18E2 2-STROKE. Kit includes gaskets, float & needle valve. Fits: 9.9C ~ 9.9D2, 15C ~ 15D2 & 18D ~ 18E2 2-stroke models. Part # 3G2871221M. $46.33.

You could order for your spare part stock ;

Water Pump Kit ; 362-87322-0 ( a must have)

Lower Unit Gasket Set : 398-87321-0 (a must mave)

Primer Bulb Assy ; 3B7-70200-3 (connector's inside o'rings can fail at any time)

Just in case, have them at hand...

Happy Boating
