The bearing head, the part the seal is pressed into, can be removed by unbolting the "cap" or half of the lower unit with the skeg attached. Normally when you do that you replace the o-ring on the seal holder and the spagetti that seals the cap as well. Since you're into that, normally people change out the driveshaft seal and shift shaft seal for a complete job. A kit including all that stuff runs under $20.<br /><br />Alternatively, the propshaft seal can be extracted directly back towards the prop on that outboard, without any sort of disassembly. That is to say, the normal way the propshaft seal comes out is toward the water side of the bearing carrier, not the gear oil side. It is a little tricky requiring hooks and a slide hammer, but it can be a real time saver.
