my 67' 18 hp evinrude is hard to start you cant start it by using choke and spraying aero start into carb you have to spray aero start into spark plug holes. i beleive it is a problem with the carb. because when you spray aero start into carb it doesn't start but when you sprayit into the spark plug holes it starts first time. any ideas?

Re: 18hp hard to start

Time to inspect your reed plate and carb gaskets and the reeds, OMCF.

When fuel into the cylinder works and fuel into the carb doesn't it suggests a scavenging problem.

Other possible causes of weak scavenging are a blown seal between the crankcases and lost compression.

BTW, I am not familiar with "Aero Start", but if it is an ether based starting fluid that is not designed specifically for 2 strokes (includes lubricant) you can easily destroy your engine with it. Don't use it. Use fuel premix instead.

Let us know what you find, and good luck. :)

Re: 18hp hard to start

i have recently resealed crank cases with a sealer called dyagrip casket maker which is silicone based and the engine has good compression around 200 somthing psi. the carb that is on it was found in a dirty shed. i took it apart and washed it with petrol. could the carb be dirty? but once it runs it is perfect idles smoth and runs smooth and is easy to start but once ive stoped to fish for more than 45 mins it wont start until a spary the aero start which is designed for 2 stroke lawnmowers.
