g'day my 1967 evinrdue 18 is playing up on me. i bought the engine and had to re seal the crank case as it was leaking fuel all over the place. so went i try it out on my boat for half and hour i get back to the ramp and take the cover off and there is a splatter mark on the inside of the cowl and it is fuel. the splatter mark is opposite where it was leaking before. and another thing is it normal with these engines that there is a fine layer of fuel in the bottom of the cowl at the back? the fuel is like the thickness of say, melted butter.

Thanks

Melted butter! Doesnt sound to good mate! Sounds like a leak back at the carbs and water is mixing in with either the oil or fuel which of course isnt a healthy thing. Sounds like new gaskets all round to me and then make sure everthing is torque to spec' What did you reseal the crank case with?

Hi OMCfreak
Here in the U.S. Form-a-gasket is a Permatex product. While it is a good product used in the correct application, it is not the right stuff for sealing crank cases. Gel-seal is good stuff too and is recomended for most modern OMC crank cases. On models of your vintage sealer 1000 is called for. All of these products have equivlents sold under different names. I can see this might get confusing. You may need some one from down under to help steer you to the correct product in your area.

Re: 18 hp question

The proper sealer is called '1000 Sealer' or OMC Adhesive sealant 'M', and it should be available from the dealer. Gel seal isn't for crankcases with spagetti seals (to the best of my knowlege anyway). A good subsitute is "Three Bond 1104" if you can find it, or 3M's "Scotch-Grip Rubber & Gasket Adhesive 847".

Permatex Form-A-Gasket won't work. I should know - I tried it once. Neither will any sort of RTV Silicone.

I have had good luck with Permatex MotoSeal Grey, which is made for the purpose. But the engine's I've tried it on have only seen a year's service so far so consider it a last resort. Still, I find it applies easily and isn't bad to clean up so I'm hoping I can use it in the future.

Hope this helps!

EDIT: Alcan got his post in while I was typing. Don't take mine as contradictory to his at all. Pardon, alcan!
