18 HP Evinrude won't idle down

Hello, I have a 1968 Evinrude Fastwin outboard that starts on the first pull, and runs great at mid and full throttle. I changed the plugs but it still won't idle down to where it should without sputtering fast and slow or dieing out. The white knob on the front of the engine for the rich and lean adjustment only turns about 3/4's of a turn in either direction and does nothing to smoothen out the idle speed. If anyone has any advice on what I can do I thank you. I can be reached at my email also at Jefrsonco@aol.com
Thanks.

Hello again PS...

If the carb is in good shape and all, sounds like all is needed is a needle adjustment. The knob on the needle pulls off so adjustments can be made. Gently run the needle in until it seats, again GENTLY. Back out about a turn and a half. Fire up and let her get warm and run a little to blow out the unused gas. Back off on the throttle to just idle in gear and adjust the needle in 1/8th turns in or out to achieve best idle. Try not to get the needle to far in (clockwise) or you will get a lean running condition and she'll kick on ya'or sneeze. If you get her running smooth, back the needle out 1/8th turn or so to prevent a to lean mix at idle.

thanks for the advice. Is the needle your talking about the white knob that is on the front for lean/rich?
