Well lack of starting. I got me a 1977 Black Max 175HP Outboard. We got to launch the boat for the first time on saturday. Thats about it though. Didn't get to go anywhere as the motor would not start. we tried everything.. Brought it home and fired right up.

The next day we come back out and same thing. I finally got it to run by closing teh butterflies and holding it at WOT till gas starting coming out of the carbs then she fired up and ran pretty goood. It quit a couple times while we were riding around in the channel.. but then it fired up pretty quick

Any ideas on what miught be wrong?

Thanks for the help

Re: 175HP Black Max Starting Problems

I have a 175hp same vintage. If is trimmed down too far it is hard starting. If i trim the outboard up to a more level attitude a mere bump of the key starts it everytime. Have never considered this to be a big enough problem to try to fix. It runs great otherwise.

Re: 175HP Black Max Starting Problems

Details, please!Much more info needed if you expect help.Im assuming you just bought the motor/boat.How lond has it sat since being last ran?Was it properly winterized?Could easily be a dirty/gummed up carb issue if it has sat for any length of time. And running(or attempting to )dirty could end up making the motor worthless if its not already. But to clarify the info part, heres some of what could be wrong.Could be bad compression, could be bad internal wires, could be carbs, could be dirty/old fuel or tank, could be bad gas lines/bulb/hoses,could be faulty choke/enricher,could need plugs, could need fuel pump, could just need more gas to get going cold, the list could go on and on including electrical issues.Your detailed info and your troubleshooting knowledge are key in getting this motor going.help us help you.Good luck.

Re: 175HP Black Max Starting Problems

I bought a 1988 cajun bassboat w/a 1988 150xr4 this past march. This is what i did to get it TO THE POINT OF TRYING TO START THE FIRST TIME.First i was very confident that PO had properly taken care of it and winterized it(it had sat for 5yrs when i bought it).Checked compression and spark.Drained all old gas.Checked tank for debris.Got new gas lines and bulb.new plugs.Drained lower unit and refilled, cleaned carbs, put new gas in it and it was purring w/in10 seconds of first turn of the key.Checked to make sure water was flowing properly and watched(like a hawk)the temp guage as it warmed up.Have since replaced a few things(t-stats,poppet valve, etc)as precautions. You shoud do all above AT LEAST,before trying to really get going. That would eliminate A LOT of possible causes and get you on the right track for a good time on the lake. The above doesnt cost much other than time to do and,in my eyes,is vital for any"new to you"motor.Just be sure to do compression check first(or early on)do avoid a real disappointment after throwing money and time into it.

Re: 175HP Black Max Starting Problems

The early 175 was a hard starting engine out of the box due to the "fine" tooth flywheel(slower cranking speed)and butterfly chokes. Best way to crank em are to pump bulb up fully, back boat in water untill lower is just underwater(no backpressure) ,advance throttle 1/4 open and hold choke while cranking till it hits.

Re: 175HP Black Max Starting Problems

Thanks for all the help and suggestions..

PO had it tuned up and it ran great at his place before I bought it.. Whos to say though it wasn't warmed up before I got there...

Plugs look good, he replaced alot of the electronics, compression is good on all 6 cylinders as well.

we cranked it till the battery died the first night.. It was a bi%^!ch to get it going the second day when we went out.

Tank is new, gas lines are older but in good shape as well as the bulb.. I guess I could replace that as well.

Another issue is I have the wonderful controls where I can only have the throttle at idle in neutral or the sensor kicks out the starter. I have to go back, open the hood and manually do it... Not fun..

Any more help would be great!

Thanks

Re: 175HP Black Max Starting Problems

Would help to know what controls you have.Either a good written description or better,a photo of them.I would assume you either have a fast idle lever on top or a button in center of the pivot point of your lever. If its a fast idle lever, pump bulb tight, lift up idle lever, choke it and turn the key.If it doesnt fire, pump bulb a couple more times and repeat. If its the button on lever, depress button and push throttle 1/4 ways.choke and crank.(after priming bulb,of course).and repeat if necessary. If alls well w/motor,right about the time you think to yourself"d*mn,its flooded!),itll fire.

Re: 175HP Black Max Starting Problems

The ones I have are orioginal I think. One arm to control both. I cannot just adjust the throttle. If I do it goes into gear. There is no bipass on this set. I have tried everything.,....

Re: 175HP Black Max Starting Problems

That should be a button at tha base/center of tha arm. You should be able to push it in and move tha arm without ingaging tha gears.............

HaHaHa.............What bullit said.

yes,the button dead center of the circle on the control.right where the lever pivots in the control.Push it in and while holding it in,you can advance throttle w/out being in gear.

Re: 175HP Black Max Starting Problems

Found the button with a screwdriver yesterday.. Still need to pour gas in the carbs to fire it up.. Thats ok though we had a blast out there. I left it at the marina to get a complete check over and see why. Hope to have it out again this weekend to play some more.. Will let you know how we make out.

Thanks everyone for the help!!!!
