175 Yamaha no reverse

I have a 1991 175hp Yamaha and I keep losing reverse. If I adjust the linkage it seems to work for a while. Note the lower unit is has been replaced with a rebuilt unit but the problem was also there before I replaced the lower unit. Is this a common or known problem?? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

As I mentioned in another post, your shift shaft going from the engine down to the lower unit is rusted and has twisted. This is a common problem in pre 93 Yamaha's. You will need to remove the powerhead in order to replace the shaft. All units from 93 on and replacements shafts are now made of stainless steel and don't have this problem.

? Capt Ken do you know if it is possible to use a late model SS shift shaft in a early model (89 130hp yamaha) :confused:
