175 PROBLEMS

The problem I’m having on my 1995 175 Evinrude intruder. Is as follows.

1. Over the last 5 or 6 months I seem to have slowly lost some RPM’s. I use to run 5600 at WOT with a 22 Raker. Now I can only get 5100-5200.
2. The motor runs fairly good for the first run up to temp, but them it will start to miss at WOT and gradually get worst throughout the whole range of the throttle until the most that I can keep it running is about 3000. Sometime it just stops like I turned the key off, but it always seems to start back up and will run if I stay out of the 4000-5000 RPM range. It does not run good after restart but it will restart and it has not stranded me YET.

The only things I noticed while trouble shooting the motor are

1. The # 1 spark plug is dry and seems to be caked with carbon even after running it only an hour.

Some of the things I’ve done to fix the problem and why are.

1. New coils why (it seemed to be affected by heat so I figured the coils or coil were breaking down and not creating good enough spark) DID NOT FIX PROBLEM
2. New power pack why (because I had one) DID NOT FIX PROBLEM
3. Went through the whole fuel system new line, fuel/water separator, checked the vent, and motor filter. Why (I’m guessing now) DID NOT FIX PROBLEM
4. Checked the plug wires why (can’t hurt) all good DID NOT FIX PROBLEM.
5. Replaced VRO remote tank why (VRO oil reservoir seemed to have a small leak) fixed leak but yet again DID NOT FIX PROBLEM.
6. Replaced ignition switch and kill switch why (because I thought there could be a short in there) DID NOT FIX PROBLEM
7. Replaced fuel/VRO pump why (I just felt like throwing some more money at the boat) DID NOT FIX PROBLEM
8. Replaced the stator why (it was almost the last major thing electrically that had not been replaced so why the hell not) DID NOT FIX PROBLEM

Question to anyone out there and it seems this is not an isolated problem for only me is can anyone help me figure this out.

Thanks
Kevin R.

Re: 175 PROBLEMS

THe plugs i'm running are the champian Q77's and the plug doesn't look steamcleaned and there does not seem to be water in the cyl. I didn't mention but the reeds are Boysen duel stage glass and when they where replaced last season i had the carbs looked at to make sure they didn't need any work while we had them off, they were in great shape. Also i have decarbonized the motor earlier this season but that also did not seem to effect the problem i'm having.

Re: 175 PROBLEMS

Try the fresh plug and if you get the same problem right away you can rule it out. How is the bulb when this occurs? Have you tried bumping the primer to see if it picks up? You MAY want to try lightly spraying some ether (I now its not good) around the intake manifold to see if you're sucking air around the intake manifold (especially around #1).Have you removed the head and looked at #1?

Re: 175 PROBLEMS

Check the recirculating valve that corresponds with #1 cylinder
