I am new to having an outboard have always had I/O's in the past. Bought a pontoon last year with a 175 direct inject Evinrude motor. Whenever we turn it off it seems to discharge a small amount of fuel, coating the water and giving off a gas smell. Is this normal for an outboard?

Re: 175 Direct Injection

I would have done a pressure test of the injectors to see if any one is leaking after engine is shut down. Not quite a 'DOY' job, but an experienced mech with proper test equipment.
You may do a 'light' version by yourself:
Pump up pressure with primer bulb.
Turn key ON and wait until high pressure pump stops.
Repeat this a couple of times.
If fuel on the water, you have a leaking injector.
(I take for granted you have no visible leak on engine!!)

no there is no visible sign of leak, it appears to be coming out the exhaust. will try that "light" version to see what happens, thanks

Re: 175 Direct Injection

It might even be as 'simple' as that you have one cylinder not working properly. The DI engines hardly notices a dropped cylinder except when it comes to performance. Pull the plugs and check for even 'burn' and/or do a compression test. Remember to index the plugs when re-installing!
