165 mercruiser no spark

So I did a bunch of testing but got no spark when turning over engine. If I turn on key and place a screwdriver on the mounting plate for the points. And touch the plate and the points it will spark. Can anyone explain what might be going on?

you need to properly file and service your points.

right now your points are NOT closing and not making contact that then allows a spark when the points open.
