160 thermostat

with a 160 thermostat on a 2000 5.7 EFI Merc the temp gauge reeds about 170 is that ok- and how high could it be and still be safe?????<br /><br />Thanks<br />COOL It

Modern motors run well above 190 deg. If yours runs at a constant 170 even with a 160 t-stat I'm sure that everything will be ok. Your guage could well be off by that much. Consistancy is the key.<br /><br />The only reason that boats have 160 deg stats is to keep salt from plating out in the engine, otherwise 180 deg would be an ideal temperature for combustion efficiency.

The audible warning system is set to "go off" at 200 degrees. 170-180 is acceptable, might even hit 190 after a hard run at full throttle.
