i've got an '87 model long shaft evinrude 15, and i've decided to replace the water pump. however when i tore it down, a few things caught my eye...

on the extension housing there is a hole in the side that goes to tube that the driveshaft is located in. it was plugged up with what seems to be pitch. i was able to scrape it out with my fingernail. is this hole supposed to be open? it doesn't look like water that could get in has anywhere to go.

also, when i pulled off the pump housing, there was a little white "hat" type bushing thing underneath the upper seal. it's made of plastic and looks like it's seen better days. is it something that was made obsolete by the newer water pump kit, or do i need a new one?

i've got a factory manual and i think i'd be better off with some generic one! the only parts breakdowns that it shows are diagrams for where to put certain types of grease etc, doesn't say what each part is!

Re: 15hp water pump replacement

Welcome to iboats chum man!

The little holes your looking at are cavity drains. Make sure they are open. They drain water from the open cavities in the midsection that would otherwise freeze if not drained out.

Don't worry about the little "hat". This was a water restrictor used early on the 15's. The new pump kits are for both 9.9 and 15's.

OEM service manuals will not, usually, show parts breakdowns. You need a parts manual for parts breakdown. If you need to see the parts breakdown, check the BRP site below. Click on engine diagrams and follow the prompts.

http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/
