150XP Loses power after warm start

I have a 1989 Evinrude 150XP that starts cold and runs fine until it's shut off and restarted. I can idle, race WOT, or cruise from a cold start but when I shut it off for just a few minutes, it loses power and dies as I increase throtle while in gear only but if I fiddle with the throtle stick it will eventually (many minutes later) get full power back and all seems normal. When it is in this troubled state it will idle fine and increase throtle when in neutral, just not in gear. -- Any ideas??? could this be a choke solenoid or primer???

Well Mad.....could be either/or.

Have you tried pumping the primer bulb when this condition exists?

Notice any wet areas inside the pan of the engine that are leaky line related?

Here is something to try with the primer solenoid. After the engine is started, disconnect the top carb primer hose at the carb and see if you still have fuel spurting out. If you do, the primer solenoid is not releasing or the valve innards are afoul letting fuel through after the solenoid is released from the key. Becareful when doing this test.

When was the last time the carbs were overhauled and fuel lines checked? What VRO pump do you have....three wire or four wire?

You really need to track this problem down. If the engine is running lean on any cylinder, you could be in for a rebuild down the road.

Keep us posted.

Re: 150XP Loses power after warm start

The engine pan is clean and dry. Infact, 2 years ago the fuel lines were replaced and the carbs were rebuilt. I've pulled the plugs and all of them look the same with little wear. I would have replaced them anyway this weekend but I couldn't find the right ones at the couple stores I checked on Sunday. Could this really be a lean running cylinder sinse the thing starts and runs fine from cold all day long? The problem only exists when the engine is restarted when warm. Then, if you play with the trottle for a while (as to not let it die), it suddenly regains it's otherwise good performance and again will run all day. The odd thing is that in neutral it will rev up as if nothing is wrong. If it were starving for fuel would it still rev up under no load? When it is in it's 'good state' it will idle, troll, or run like a banshee!

I don't know how many wires the VRO has; I'm not sure how to check this but I'll see if I can figure that out (I do have the OEM book).

I am a little confused now when you say it could be "either/or". I thought the choke solenoid and the primer were perhaps the same thing, I just didn't know what to call it.

Another thought crossed my mind, this motor has the "Quick Start" feature that is supposed to advance the timing if the motor is cold (less than 92 degrees). Could there be some way this is screwing up? What drives the logic that controls this feature? The power pack maybe? The power pack is the ignition control module isn't it?

I trailer the boat, and with heavy storms predicted for the next few days It might be awhile for me to check the fuel line but I can probably tear down the solenoid and clean it. What do you think...

Wait, I think something just clicked. the bulb on the fuel line is called the primer and the "thing" on the side of the carbs with a wire or two and a hose with a red plastic lever is called the solenoid. Is this corect?

I think I should change the the bulb anyway because once in a while the bulb does not stay hard. When I pump it up as I first start the moptor, occasionaly it seems like the bulb loses all pressure but the very next squeeze it's firm again. I have checked the bulb when the problem was present and it seemed firm to me. Is the bulb supposed to stay rock hard?

Thanks again for your time!
