150hp XR6 - where does it pee?

From some of my previous post many of you may already know that I recently (probably to months ago) purchased a 1982 Ranger with a 1993 150hp XR6 Mercury outboard. Well, I now have the trailer painted, a new dash in the boat, all the wiring done, etc. so I wanted to try the motor. I bought a set of cuffs at Wal-Mart, pulled the boat out of my shop, hooked the hose up, and to my surprise the motor started right off. My problem, or at least I think it is a problem, is that I could not see any water coming out of the motor so I shut it off after maybe 10 seconds.

I really didn't know where to look for the water output so I have attached an image of the motor with letters along the vertical side of the image. If someone could tall me at approximately which letter height I should expect the water to come out it would be appreciated. In fact, any and all comments would be appreciated.

Don

right between D and E, probably closer to E. It takes about 30 seconds or so for water to come out. The thermostats have to open up for a steady stream to appear.

Hey, thanks a bunch. I seen that hole there and assumed that was where the water came out but when none did I thought maybe it was the exhaust. Now that I know that it takes that long I won't be afraid to let it idle for longer. I guess that I could go out to the shop and figure out where the exhaust does come out but if you could tell me I wouldn't have to put shoes on.:)

Thanks again,

Don

When you fire it up, there should be some cloudy water running out the center of the propeller almost immediately. If the tell-tale isn't plugged up with a spider web (10% chance), it'll sputter after about 10 seconds, and maybe get a good stream after 30 seconds or so. If your supply water is real cold, it might not get a good stream at idle. There should be a good flow out the prop, though. You can feel it. It should be warm to hot, not scalding.

All the water at the tell tale has to go through the t-stats first. That's why it's not always steady.

hope it helps

Yeah, it helps a bunch but I still was a bit confused about where the stream of water should actually come out so I got ambitious and went out to the shop and took another picture which is attached. Please describe each hole that I have indicated with a "?".

Because the cuffs were leaking a lot of water it was difficult to tell if there was water coming out of the center of the prop or not. I did see light colored smoke (maybe exhaust) coming out from that area. Is the smoke normal for an engine that had not been run for several months?

Thanks again,

Don

As J Martin said.there should be cloudy water come out the very end of your prop(also where the exhaust comes out).B y 30 sec. or so,you should have somewhat decent stream coming out the tell tale(pee hole, whatever). If not, shut her down immediately and service your waterpump(impeller, gaskets, possible base plate,etc.).Theres 2 things engines dont like at all.overheating and lean running conditions.BTW,if your muffs are where theyre supposed to be,there should be no issue distinguishing water from them and water coming out of the prop.Post your findings. This forum will get you going.

Muffs

It's the top one with the white nipple. It's off center so that you can see it from inside the boat & confirm that it's peeing.

Thanks RadarRick, that is what I needed to know. Now, what is the larger second hole for?

Cheers,

Okay, I do get a stream of water out but I had to rev it up a bit. I have not got the tach working yet thus I can't say what the RPM was but it didn't take much. In fact, I only had 5 lbs. of water pressure when I got the stream out of it. I assume that I would have more pressure if the motor was actually in water rather than just using cuffs and a hose only partially open.

Mine is a bit different, but it looks like exhaust/water vent.

Re: 150hp XR6 - where does it pee?

Should get 1-3 lbs min of water pressure at idle (650 rpm) and over 12 lbs at WOT. As said above the T-Stat has to open before the water exits the tel-tale port .The larger lower hole is an exhaust, when under power the exhaust normally exits thru the lower unit around the prop. However when in the water and /or idling in neutral or low RPM (low prop pull) the exhaust tube fills with water and the lower idle exhaust pressure can not force the exhaust down to the prop, so it exits the upper port in your picture. You will see water and fumes exiting that opening at idle when you are in the water.
