The 1972 Mercury 1150 on my 18' SS is sucking water from the exhaust plate on two cylinders so I am looking for a replacement. I went to look at another inline 6 today but it had low compression on #3. It was a 1975 1500 so the weight is almost identical to my current motor and I could have reused my controls and the power trim I just added. So the hunt continues...
I am going to look at another mercury on Sunday, but this one is a 1981 V6 150 complete with controls and power T&T. This engine is about 75lbs heavier than my current set up.
This is the gray area. The boat is rated to 140hp. Both of these engines are rated at the power head. So they both are less than 140 at the prop. So the first question is this a legal argument that can be made since the shift to prop rating didn't happen until 82/83...? A more modern engine could still be legal for the boat and make more power at the prop than an old 150.
The second question is anyone running a 150 on an 18' hull?
Thanks!
