150HP mercury voltage regulator rectifier

Hello everyone I have a 2003 Mercury 150XL SW / Model# 1150462AY and this past weekend one of the voltage regulator broke. I bought a new one and I noticed that is getting really hot and my RPM don"t pass over 2000 . what else I have to check . Please let me know thanks.

So you cannot get over 2000RPM with the new VR? Sounds like some unusual kind of a short, since VRs share the stator with the ign system.

You might disconnect the new VR and see if the RPMs return, as a check, before you start chasing wild waterfowl.
