150hp Evinrude 1985 help...

I have a 1985 150hp Evinrude that has a few problems that normally seem easy to sort out, but I am struggling with this engine.

1. The timing is off and I am not sure how to change it...?

2. The idle is erratic. It may be tied into the timing issue, but I am not sure.

Any suggestions are very much appreciated!

how do you know the timing is off have you tested it?

It is backfiring and or pre-firing.

Did you actually test the idle timing with an inductive timing light? Is the timing erratic? Check each plug wire when running and be sure each wire flashes with regular, strong white flashes. There are many other reasons why the engine will backfire: coil wires switched, broken or cracked reeds, sneezes at idle due to carb butterflies being slightly open, lean sneezes at idle due to restricted carb idle circuits, leaking/cracked recirc lines. Also, recheck/verify the carb sync and link.

Where can I get the manual specifically for my motor and not the general Clymer manual?
