Seloc Manual says 1/16" from the base of bowl but the way the floats fall, it could be different depending on where U measure from the base. (Towards the needle, in the middle or towards the front on the float/bowl. I've also heard the floats should be level. I hope to get this right so I can rule out one more thing for idling rough issue. Does anyone have a definite answer?

I always set my floats, perfectly paralell (level) to the carb body.

Thanks for the reply. Nice rides by the way!(link) Now I wanna be sure to get this right. My floats have a base thickness and then sort of a tappering lip on top that tappers towards the front of the float. Is that level with the base part of the float or the lip? Does that make sense?

Thanks, I just put my link in there to show, I've no newbie, been a motorhead for yrs. Now, I got ya, it doesn't matter the shape of the float, the bottom shape (base) is going to determine how it floats, keep that level with the carb body, this should be close to the factory setting, IMO

Wait, if your floats are an odd shape with a lip along the side, it's possible that the lip should be level with the carb body, look it over closely, gently close the float, and use your judgement as to how much fuel would be needed to close the float normally, then possibly using the service manual as a guide, set it there. You'll have to make the final call on that.

Re: 150 XR2 Float level? Please help.

Our bread and butter was my Dad wrenchin on cars and he loves the classics so I have an appreciation. I would like to get my hands on a 35 ford pickup and restore with my dad. Ok, that makes sense. I've had those carbs off twice already and I hate having to go in again but I'm not confident they're right.

Thanks again!

I may have a Mercury OEM shop manual for your motor, depending on the serial number of your motor. Provide your serial number and I can check if I do. If I do, I can provide you with the float level instructions from that manual. Perhaps the Mercury OEM manual provides better/clearer instructions than the Seloc. It usually does.

The attached photo may help you out with the "1/16" float setting method. However, I found the below linked threads, which seem to conclude that the float should be "even" with the base as per the Mercury OEM manual instructions. They also suggest a few other possible fixes/adjustments to the XR2 carbs.

Perhaps either way is OK and it may not make that much difference.
