150 warning horn/buzzer

good morning all. I am looking to add a warning indicator light to my 1986 johnson 150. The horn is operational and located under the dash and is difficult to hear at wot. Not able to move to a good location either. I wanted to add a warning indicator lamp on the dash. This would lite when there is a problem. Looked into adding system check but it is not cost effective as I have twins and would not be worth the cost. I was wondering if anyone knows if this can be done. I believe the tan wire shorts to ground when temp gets too hot etc. This would makethe horn go. would I be able to run 12v to a indicator lamp (mounted on the dash) and the have the ground for this light tied into the tan lead going into the horn. I would like to use both the horn and the light if possible. My thought is the light world work the same time the horn is going. (either steady for temp/fuel or blink in series with low oil etc) Any assistance would be grateful. Thanks to all and have a great day!!!!

hello
wire it between the purple ign wire and the brown wire between the horn and the engine. the ground circuit will be completed by the sensor. test when done by gronding the temp sensor lead with the key on.
good luck and keep posting

OMC used a warning light on the early engines, the trouble being it was hard to see in sunlight. One thing I have thought of doing, as my hearing is terrible, would be to wire up a louder horn. A small 12 volt horn off of a motorcycle, wired just as Rodbolt stated, and mounted under the dash would be an easy fix. I would think a used cycle horn would be cheap, and easy to find.

rodbolt: Down there in that salt water, could'nt you find an old navy klaxon, Or was the voltage wrong? Up here! I was thinking of an old firehouse bell. Both put real meaning in (ALARM)

Wire in a relay if you plan to add any kind of sound system except for the factory horn. The newer horns are a lot louder and shriller than earlier ones. The sensors, oil tank level circuits, and the VRO pump electronics cannot take much amperage thru them when they activate.

Thankyou all for the help. I will connect the lamp from the purple ign switch and the tan lead for the horn from the engine. Thanks again everyone.

Steve
