I have a 2001 Yamaha 150 HPDI that runs a little strange. Every time when I put my boat in, I am able to tilt the engine into the water but then when I go to start it, it will just make a bunch of clicking noises. Half of the time it will start but if I touch the trim button it will die on me.Then the tilt/trim doesn't operate. I will try to raise and lower the engine several times with the tilt/trim without any results. Then, suddenly the tilt/trim will start working and the engine will start right up. If I touch the tilt/trim, the engine will stop. I will then plane the boat off once it is started but when I trim the engine up, it will jerk very hard and drop the RPM's then come back up. It will do this twice while planing off but then quits doing it for the rest of the day. This problem is becoming more and more frequent and any time I touch the trim button when the engine is below 1300, the engine will die even after being run for 2 hours. I am keeping the engine running the whole time I am out since I don't want it to die in the middle of the lake.

To me it seems like the tilt/trim is taking away the engine's power.

I am thinking it is battery or tilt/trim related?

The fuel filters are all clean and free of debris so the surging is not related to clogged filters.

Any ideas what this could be?
Any Ideas about how to fix it?

Sounds like battery or battery connections. First check battery posts and engine connectioms.

Also check the ground connections on the block. Recently went through alarm/tilt trim/starting issue because of a loose ground. Connection looked good, but didn't realize that the connection bolt was stripped and not making a constant ground connection until I inadvertantly touched the wire and realized it was loose.

don't keep using it until you fix the problem...voltage spikes can ruin the computer ($$$$)8)

suzuki115,
About where is this ground wire located where it connects to the engine block?

you have a loose or dirty battery cable connection, carefully check the battery terminals, if they have wing nuts swap them for stainless steel nuts. check the battery cable connections on the engine. check the cable connections at the battery switch if applicable.
also carefully check the connection at the starter lug for the power tap wire, some of the early HPDI motors used a black chafe sleeve, the sleeve was slightly to long and got pinched between the lug and the starter terminal. created allsorts of issues.
wont tell ya how I found it but it was on twin 200's and violent.
and you have been warned about voltage spikes and the cost of yamaha electronics, they rarley fail but when they do stand by.

post it again, I dont think JUSTINTIME has a clue..
not busting your chops, I just feel you dont know the proper test for a voltage drop test.
post it again and we can pick it apart.
be careful I stayed at a holiday inn :):).
but post itr.

I apologize I am happy to say :):).
I tech that actually paid attention.
this drop test works for any DC voltage operated equipment of any make.
thanks JUSTINTIME
you kinda restored my faith in the future techs :).

that is nothing to what we actually learn d:)
i was kinda of worried that u were going to rip me a new one:$
MMI is a great school if u have no idea how a 2 stroke or 4 stroke works
luckily i have over 15 years working on jet-ski, so stators, pulsers are not new to me
the school is great, but u need to make the best of it
by the way i got 100% on my test today on diagnosing outboards, it was the highest in that class this year, the teacher said nobody ever got 100% before
i said well i am not a nobody

rodbolt, if it is cool i would like to pick ur brain about the field. cool if i PM u?

Re: 150 running erratic when tilt/trim is operated

sure.
its slim pickings.
just remember it really doesnt matter who made the internal combustion articulated rod engine, they all work inside the same narrow parameters.
I started out in the automotive field back in the 70's then went as a machinist and CNC lathe and mill programmer/set up man then on to the USN for about 6 years in the Navy´s advanced electronics field.
got tossed out of the usn, retired actually, so in the 90´s I went back to outboards.
I had worked part time for a few places in Tx while I was a machinist.
but that voltge drop test will work with most ny DC circuit starting, lighting, blower motors and such what nots you will get involved in.
I am also certified in mercruiser and volvo. I have been certified for suzuki, force and mercury in the past years.
now I am just an old yamaha master tech.
but they did place my pic on their web site.
but always remember the words of my High School shop teacher.
Mr Morton.
he woulds walk up and say, some of us get older and wiser and some just get older.
